Bollywood Remakes Gujarati Films

The upcoming Hindi film “Shaitaan” is a remake of the successful Gujarati family comedy “Vash,” which released in February 2023. Ajay Devgn will play the lead role, while Vikas Bahl, director of “Queen” and “Super 30,” will be behind the camera. Actor R Madhavan is also confirmed to be part of the cast.

This is not the first time Bollywood has borrowed inspiration from Gujarati cinema. Here are a few examples of Hindi films remade from Gujarati plays and movies:

• 102 Not Out: This comedy-drama tells the story of a 102-year-old father trying to break the record for the world’s oldest person, and his relationship with his son. The film is based on a Gujarati play of the same name.

• Super Nani: Released in 2014, this film is a thoughtful comedy about a woman who dedicates her life to her family but is constantly disrespected and mistreated by them. Her life takes a turn when her grandson returns from the US and stands up for her. The movie is inspired by the popular Gujarati play “Baa Mari Boundary.”

• OMG – Oh My God!: This blockbuster film tackles the concept of religion and superstition through the story of an atheist whose life is turned upside down after an earthquake destroys his shop. It is based on the Gujarati play “Kanji vs Kanji.”

• Waqt – The Race Against Time: This suspenseful drama featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, and Priyanka Chopra is a remake of the successful Gujarati play “Avajo Wala Phari Malaishu.”

• Aakhen: This thriller film, directed by Vipul Amritlal Shah, is adapted from his own Gujarati play “Andhalo Pato.”

• Ittefaq: Released in 1969, this suspense thriller film, one of the few Bollywood movies without songs, is based on the Gujarati play “Dhooms.”

These remakes showcase the influence of Gujarati cinema on Bollywood and its ability to entertain audiences with relatable stories and diverse themes.
