Making movies based on true stories is no easy feat. It takes a lot of digging, deep understanding, and a bit of creativity to get it right. Now, director Sudipto Sen is back with another movie based on real events, “Bastar: The Naxal Story.”
What is the movie about?
“Bastar: The Naxal Story” tells the story of the Bastar rebellion, which happened in 1910. It was a fight against British rule in central India, led by tribal people who were angry about the British taking over their forests and forcing them to move. This rebellion, also called the Bhumkal movement, was led by Gunda Dhur and Diwan Lal Karendra Singh. Even though the British brought in more troops to stop the rebellion, the problems with the forests continued even after India gained independence, leading to conflicts like the Naxalite movement in Chhattisgarh.
Why did the rebellion happen?
In 1908, something happened near Jagdalpur that angered the tribal people. The British were taking control of their forests, and this made them very upset. They started planning the rebellion in secret for nine months. In January, they sent out messages to let others know what was going to happen. Then, on February 6, 1910, things got violent. Tribal people attacked forest officials and anyone else who wasn’t from the area. They took control of parts of the region because of the difficult terrain. In the northwest, they even killed some officials and got weapons for their followers. They had some victories, even pushing British soldiers out of the area.

“Bastar: The Naxal Story” is a Hindi-language movie coming out in 2024. Sudipto Sen directed the movie, and Vipul Amrutlal Shah produced it. It has a great cast, including Adah Sharma, Indira Tiwari, Vijay Krishna, Shilpa Shukla, Yashpal Sharma, Subrat Dutta, and Raima Sen.
