Merry Christmas: A Tale of Deception with a Slow Start

The film “Merry Christmas,” starring Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi, hit theaters on January 12th. Directed by Sriram Raghavan, it promises a thrilling journey through deception, death, and hidden secrets. While the film received praise for its story and performances, its box office debut was less than merry.

Sacnilk reports that “Merry Christmas” earned only Rs 2.55 crore (approximately $31,000) on its opening day in India, across all languages. This was a lower-than-expected start for a film with such star power.

Occupancy rates varied throughout the day, with the Hindi version seeing the lowest numbers in the morning (6.81%) and evening (12.14%). However, it picked up in the afternoon (8.98%) and night (18.31%), averaging 11.56% for the day. Interestingly, the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film enjoyed better attendance.

The story centers around two strangers who meet on Christmas Eve. What starts as a passionate encounter quickly spirals into a dark and twisted web of lies. The film also introduces a talented child actor named Pari.

“Merry Christmas” boasts a strong supporting cast, including Sanjay Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Pratima Kazmi, and Radhika Apte. Interestingly, the film was shot in both Hindi and Tamil, featuring different actors for each language. For example, Sanjay Kapoor and Vinay Pathak appear in the Hindi version, while Radhika Sarathkumar takes on their roles in the Tamil version.
