Kangana Ranaut Says ‘Script Ready’ On Bilkis Bano Case, Claims No Support From Major OTT Giants
January 9, 2024Bollywood Actress Seeks Platform for Film on Bilkis Bano Case
A well-known Indian actress, Kangana Ranaut, has expressed her desire to make a film based on the tragic case of Bilkis Bano, a survivor of the 2002 Gujarat riots. However, she faces challenges finding a platform for her project.
Bilkis Bano’s horrific story of sexual assault and family loss during the riots sparked national outrage. Now, Kangana Ranaut claims she has a script ready for a film on the subject, based on three years of research and hard work.
Her frustration stems from the lack of support from major streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. In a recent online interaction, she revealed that these platforms declined her project, citing their guidelines against so-called “politically motivated” films.
Kangana further mentioned that JioCinema, another platform, expressed hesitation due to her perceived political affiliation with the BJP party. With Zee going through a merger, her options seem limited.
The actress, who also wears the hats of producer and director, highlights the potential hurdles faced by artists who tackle sensitive themes perceived as politically charged. This raises questions about the creative freedom offered by these platforms and their stance on films dealing with real-life controversies.
While the specific reasons behind the rejections remain undisclosed, Kangana’s statement has ignited discussions about the portrayal of sensitive social issues in cinema. Whether platforms should prioritize entertainment over potentially critical or uncomfortable narratives is a point of debate.
The Bilkis Bano case, a brutal reminder of social injustices, holds immense potential for a powerful and thought-provoking film. Kangana’s struggle to find a platform for her project adds another layer to this already complex story.
It remains to be seen whether she will find a way to bring her vision to life and contribute to raising awareness about this painful chapter in Indian history through the medium of cinema.
I want to make that story I have the script ready, researched and worked on it for three years but @netflix , @amazonIN and other studios wrote back to me that they have clear guidelines they don’t do so called politically motivated films, @JioCinema said we don’t work with… https://t.co/xQeVfc3SyI

The actor’s reply came after a user on X asked, “Dear@KanganaTeam Mam. Your passion for#WomenEmpowerment is SO encouraging! Would you be interested in telling the story of #BilkisBano with a powerful movie? Will you? You will be able to show the world, how a state government with some terrorist outfit unleashed terror on a particular community. It resulted in the rape of a woman and the death of her toddler daughter along with six others from the family. You can show, how Bilkis fought against the corrupt system when the men responsible were released unlawfully and garlanded in a sic society. And how she won today. Will you do it for #BilkisBano, #Feminism or at least #Humanity?”
Kangana was last seen in the 2023 film ‘Tejas’ and is gearing up for the release of her self-directed movie ‘Emergency’ in which she plays India’s only woman prime minister Indira Gandhi.
