Gangu Ramsay Passes Away At 83; Revisiting Ramsay Brothers’ Classic Horror Movies

Cinematographer-filmmaker Gangu Ramsay, part of the legendary Ramsay Brothers, known for their cult classic horror films, passed away at the age of 83. Gangu Ramsay had been battling health issues for the past month and breathed his last at a hospital in Mumbai on Sunday morning.

Gangu Ramsay was a renowned cinematographer and film producer who made significant contributions to Indian cinema. He worked on more than 50 films under the Ramsay Brothers banner, including iconic horror movies like ‘Veerana’, ‘Purana Mandir’, and ‘Band Darwaza’. His work left a lasting impact on the horror genre in Bollywood.

Apart from his work with the Ramsay Brothers, Gangu Ramsay also collaborated with several Bollywood stars. He worked with Akshay Kumar on films like ‘Khiladi Ka Khiladi’, ‘Sabse Bada Khiladi’, and ‘Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi’, as well as Saif Ali Khan’s debut film ‘Aashiq Awara’. Gangu Ramsay’s talent extended to television as well, where he worked on Zee’s horror shows for over eight years, including ‘Saturday Suspense’, ‘Nagin’, and ‘Jimbo’. He also ventured into the South Film Industry, collaborating with actors like Vishnu Vardhan.

The Ramsay Brothers, a pseudonym for a family of Bollywood filmmakers, have made more than 30 horror films in India, establishing themselves as pioneers of the genre. Some of their most famous works include ‘Purani Haveli’, ‘Veerana’, ‘Purana Mandir’, ‘Darwaza’, ‘Bandh Darwaza’, and ‘Saboot’. Their first film, ‘Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche’, was a milestone for Indian horror cinema, shot in just 40 days on a minimal budget.

 

The Ramsay Brothers’ 1980s horror films are often remembered for their unique blend of sex and supernatural elements. Despite being low-budget productions, these films resonated with audiences and became cult classics. Their success paved the way for other filmmakers to explore the horror genre in Indian cinema.
