Main Event Breakdown: Rhodes vs. Reed Ends in WarGames Preview Disaster

Undisputed WWE Championship: Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Bronson Reed

The night’s main event, a sudden and massive title match, saw Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes defend his title against the formidable Bronson Reed. The match was a hard-hitting affair, with Reed using his overwhelming size and power to dominate the champion for large portions. Reed delivered a massive Senton and the Jagged Edge, coming incredibly close to an upset victory. Rhodes, as always, fought from underneath, connecting with the Disaster Kick and an Avalanche Cody Cutter, narrowly avoiding Reed’s top-rope Tsunami.

The contest’s explosive conclusion came when the action spilled outside. As Rhodes cleared the commentary table, ready to put Reed through it, Logan Paul and Bron Breakker rushed the ring, attacking The American Nightmare, causing the disqualification. The assault was brutal, leading to the champion being double-teamed by members of The Vision.

The Bloodline Reunites to Save the Day, Only to Face a New Traitor

Just as the beatdown reached its peak, Jey Uso’s music hit, and he stormed the ring to fight off the attackers. To the shock of Paul Heyman and his contingent, Jimmy Uso followed, and The Usos reunited to clear the ring, hitting a stereo Superkick on Breakker and a devastating 1D on Logan Paul.

With Paul laid out on the commentary table, The Usos prepared to put him through it with a splash, but the returning Drew McIntyre rushed out and shoved Jimmy off the top rope before delivering a brutal Claymore to Jey. This confirms Drew McIntyre’s allegiance to Paul Heyman’s faction for the Men’s WarGames match, adding a terrifying new element to the multi-man clash. General Manager Nick Aldis was seen furious with Paul Heyman backstage, demanding an explanation for McIntyre’s involvement, to which Heyman simply replied that he could recruit anyone on the roster.

Shocking Return and Tournament Action

‘The Last Time is Now’ Tournament: LA Knight vs. Zack Ryder

LA Knight’s opponent in the first round of the John Cena retirement tournament was initially a mystery, but the MVP Arena erupted when none other than Zack Ryder (Matt Cardona) made his shocking return to WWE! This marked Ryder’s first main roster match since March 2020.

The former Internet Champion came out to a massive pop and a strong showing, but the momentum of LA Knight, who remains one of SmackDown’s top stars, proved too much. After a back-and-forth contest filled with near-falls and fan chants, LA Knight connected with the BFT to secure the victory and advance to the quarterfinals. Following the match, the next tournament bouts were announced for next week: Penta vs. Finn Balor and Bronson Reed vs. Carmelo Hayes.

‘The Last Time is Now’ Tournament: Jey Uso vs. The Miz

The night opened with another high-stakes tournament match as ‘Main Event’ Jey Uso faced The Miz. The Miz, fueled by a desire to retire John Cena, showcased an aggressive side, even paying tribute to Cena with a Five Knuckle Shuffle. Jey, however, withstood the assault, which included a Codebreaker and the Skull Crushing Finale, kicking out at the last second. Jey finally connected with a massive Spear and the Uso Splash to defeat The Miz and advance in the tournament, continuing his singles success.

Championship and Division Developments

WWE United States Championship: Ilja Dragunov (c) vs. Axiom

United States Champion Ilja Dragunov made good on his promise of an open challenge, which was answered by the incredibly talented Axiom. The match was a breathtaking, hard-hitting showcase of European-style wrestling, with both men trading brutal chops and high-impact offense. Axiom came close to forcing a submission with a Cross-Arm-Breaker and Triangle Choke, but the ‘Mad Dragon’ refused to quit. Dragunov finally overpowered Axiom, landing a thunderous PowerBomb and the Konstantin Special H-Bomb for the hard-earned pinfall victory, retaining his title in a show-stealing bout.

Later, during a commercial break, Tommaso Ciampa was seen attacking Axiom backstage, apparently furious at being overlooked for the open challenge, before Nathan Frazer made the save.

Jade Cargill vs. B-Fab

WWE Women’s Champion Jade Cargill returned to singles action in a non-title match against B-Fab. This was a statement match for Cargill, who made quick work of her opponent. After weathering a small flurry of offense from B-Fab, Cargill decisively took control, delivering multiple Jackknife Powerbombs and the devastating Jaded for a dominant victory. Post-match, Michin got in Cargill’s face, only to be shoved down by the Women’s Champion, hinting at a future title feud.

The WarGames Picture Clears: Charlotte Out, Jimmy In, and a 5-on-5 Announced

Women’s WarGames Team Turmoil

Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky opened the show to address the looming Women’s WarGames match against the team led by WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions The Kabuki Warriors (Asuka and Kairi Sane), Nia Jax, and Lash Legend. Ripley introduced their first two teammates: the returning Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair.

However, in a shocking moment, Charlotte Flair took the microphone and stated that she could not join the team. Citing too much bad blood and a complete lack of trust for Rhea Ripley, Flair turned down the invitation, leaving Ripley’s team short-handed. The remaining trio of Ripley, Sky, and Bliss were later ambushed backstage by their WarGames opponents, escalating the feud dramatically.

Men’s Team Finalized

In a backstage segment, the tensions for the Men’s WarGames match intensified. Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso approached Cody Rhodes, confirming their collective unity. Jimmy Uso explicitly told Cody that he spoke to CM Punk earlier and was officially in the Men’s WarGames match, siding with his brother and Cody. This leaves the announced Men’s WarGames match as a 5-on-5 contest, with both sides needing to find their final team members following Drew McIntyre’s interference.

Survivor Series Elimination Match Announcement

After a massive brawl between Sami Zayn’s allies (Rey Fenix, Shinsuke Nakamura, and The Motor City Machine Guns) and Solo Sikoa’s MFTs (Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa), General Manager Nick Aldis stepped in to regulate the chaos. Aldis announced a massive Traditional 5-on-5 Survivor Series Elimination Match for a future episode of SmackDown, featuring Sami Zayn, Rey Fenix, Shinsuke Nakamura, and The Motor City Machine Guns taking on Solo Sikoa and The MFTs, further building the rivalry toward the premium live event. The teams are as follows:

  • Team Sami Zayn: Sami Zayn, Rey Fenix, Shinsuke Nakamura, and The Motor City Machine Guns (Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley)
  • Team MFT: Solo Sikoa, Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, and two unannounced partners

SmackDown continues to deliver high-stakes, action-packed programming as the march to Survivor Series: WarGames intensifies. The additions to both WarGames teams, combined with the shock return of Zack Ryder and the growing rift within The Bloodline, ensures a dramatic few weeks ahead.
