Karthikeya Rajamouli: The Global Architect Behind ‘RRR’ and Co-Producer of ‘Varanasi’ (SSMB29)

S.S. Karthikeya is more than just the son of legendary filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli; he is a rising force in the Indian film industry, distinguishing himself as a producer, second unit director, entrepreneur, and the strategic mind behind the international success of RRR. His recent elevation to co-producer of his father’s magnum opus with Mahesh Babu, tentatively titled Varanasi (formerly Globetrotter), marks a significant step in his career, cementing his position as a major player in the pan-India cinema landscape.

Born on November 22, 1991, Karthikeya was raised in a family deeply entrenched in the Telugu film industry. His father, S.S. Rajamouli, is one of the most celebrated directors in India, and his mother, Rama Rajamouli, is an accomplished costume designer. This cinematic lineage provided a unique apprenticeship, beginning with a childhood dream of becoming a cinematographer. He embarked on his journey by taking lessons in cinematography and serving as an assistant to cinematographers, before starting as an assistant director at the young age of 16.

The Unsung Hero of the Rajamouli Camp

Karthikeya’s initial professional exposure was on his father’s massive projects. He is known in the industry for his meticulous planning skills, earning him the affectionate moniker ‘Boogie Woogie’ among his peers. His roles were diverse, ranging from a production executive for the groundbreaking two-part epic Baahubali to an assistant and second unit director for other films. He also lent his talents as a publicity designer, crafting compelling trailers and videos that have become a hallmark of his father’s visually stunning movies. His involvement is often cited as crucial, taking care of all the planning and scheduling during the demanding production stage.

The ‘RRR’ Oscar Campaign: A Masterstroke in Global Marketing

While his contributions to film production were already noteworthy, Karthikeya’s most globally recognized achievement came in the wake of RRR‘s sensational release. The film, a global blockbuster, did not initially enter the Oscars as India’s official submission. Undeterred, Karthikeya took on the monumental task of independently campaigning for the film on the international stage.

His efforts in navigating the complex world of Hollywood awards—reaching out to international media, coordinating interviews for the lead actors, Jr. NTR and Ram Charan, and generating buzz among Western critics—were a pivotal factor in the film’s success. This rigorous, months-long campaign culminated in the iconic song “Naatu Naatu” winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The significance of his contribution was highlighted when music composer M.M. Keeravani explicitly mentioned and thanked S.S. Karthikeya during his acceptance speech at the Oscars, bringing the ‘unsung hero’ into the international spotlight. Karthikeya, alongside his father, successfully demonstrated the power of a dedicated, grassroots-level international outreach, a feat that is now considered a case study in global film marketing.

The Producer: Charting an Independent Course

While deeply connected to the Rajamouli legacy, Karthikeya has been determined to carve out his own identity as an entrepreneur and producer. He established his own production banner, ‘Showing Business’, which initially focused on creating innovative theatrical trailers and promotional content.

Key Ventures Under ‘Showing Business’

  • Aakashavani (2021): This marked his debut as a feature film producer. The production involved a significant learning curve, with his father, S.S. Rajamouli, even suggesting a re-shoot after watching the first cut to enhance the antagonist’s role, showcasing the collaborative but disciplined environment he was raised in.
  • Made in India: One of his most ambitious announcements is a biopic on the ‘Father of Indian Cinema,’ Dadasaheb Phalke. This project indicates his intent to produce content that is not only commercially viable but also culturally significant.
  • Fahadh Faasil Collaborations: Karthikeya’s production house has also announced two films with Malayalam star Fahadh Faasil, titled Oxygen and Don’t Trouble the Trouble, demonstrating his interest in collaborating with diverse, pan-Indian talent.
  • Distribution Success: Proving his sharp business acumen, ‘Showing Business’ successfully distributed the Malayalam film Premalu for the Telugu market, which went on to become a major blockbuster success in the region, showcasing his eye for a profitable product beyond his family banner. He has also been involved in the distribution of other major titles like Devara.

The New Global Chapter: ‘Varanasi’ (SSMB29)

In late 2025, Karthikeya officially stepped into the producer role for his father’s next film, the massive collaboration with superstar Mahesh Babu, which was initially codenamed Globetrotter. It was later officially titled Varanasi. He is co-producing the film with veteran producer K.L. Narayana, merging the experience of a senior industry figure with his own fresh, globally-minded perspective. This project, rumored to have a colossal budget, is one of the most anticipated films in Indian cinema and a perfect platform for Karthikeya to showcase his abilities on the largest scale yet.

His active involvement was immediately visible in the lead-up to the film’s first look and title announcement event in November 2025 at Ramoji Film City. Karthikeya took to social media to directly address fans about the event’s seating and logistics, ensuring a ‘Globe-class experience’ and managing the huge fan frenzy, even reacting to a fan who flew 12 hours from Perth just for the event. At the event, he shared his sense of awe and responsibility, stating, “I thought I would start by making small films, slowly grow as a producer, and eventually make a film with a star. I imagined it might take me 15 years. But things have turned out differently, and today my first speech itself is on a global platform”. The film, which features Mahesh Babu as ‘Rudhra’ and Priyanka Chopra as ‘Mandakini’, is set for a summer 2027 release.

In addition to Varanasi, he and his father are also collaborating as producers on an untitled biopic about the birth and rise of Indian Cinema, further indicating their shared vision for grand, impactful storytelling.

Personal Life

SS Karthikeya is married to Pooja Prasad, a devotional singer and the niece of veteran actor Jagapathi Babu. Their wedding was a star-studded affair, attended by numerous Telugu film celebrities, including Prabhas. He and his wife have an active presence on social media, often sharing personal moments and insights into the demanding world of filmmaking, from experiencing earthquakes in Japan to celebrating RRR‘s various successes.

Karthikeya Rajamouli stands at a unique crossroad in Indian cinema. He is a product of its most successful family, yet he has forged a distinct, contemporary professional identity. His strategic planning, his pivotal role in bridging the gap between Indian films and global audiences, and his ambition as an independent producer signal that he is not just inheriting a legacy, but is actively shaping the future of global Indian cinema.
