Mohammed Shami tried committing suicide thrice after getting harassed by his wife
November 17, 2023Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami recently opened up about some of the most challenging moments in his life. In a startling disclosure, Shami, who is a fast bowler for the Indian national team, shared that he contemplated suicide on three occasions when he was grappling with personal issues several years ago. His family had to closely monitor him during this difficult period.
He said his family members feared he might âjumpâ from their 24th-floor apartment. Shami, one of Indiaâs leading bowlers in recent years, opened up about his personal and professional life during an Instagram live with teammate and limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma. Shami revealed during the Live session, âI think I would have lost my cricket if my family had not supported me. During that period, I contemplated suicide three times due to severe stress and personal problems.â
In March 2018, Shamiâs wife Hasin Jahan accused him of domestic violence and lodged a police complaint, following which the Indian player and his brother were charged under relevant sections. The turmoil in his personal life led his employer BCCI to put the playerâs central contract on hold for some time. Shami said to Rohit,
âRehab was stressful as the same exercises were repeated every day. Then family problems started and I also met with an accident. The accident happened 10-12 days before the IPL and my personal problems were being highlighted in the media â, Speaking about another painful phase of his life after suffering an injury in the 2015 World Cup, Shami said that it took him almost 18 months to get back on the field.
âOne of the most traumatic experiences of my life was when I was injured during the 2015 World Cup. It took a grueling 18 months for me to make a complete recovery, and the entire experience was incredibly stressful.â âThen my family explained that every problem has a solution no matter how big the problem is. My brother supported me a lot.â
