Dunki: A Solid Hit Even on a Budget

Shah Rukh Khan’s latest film, Dunki, directed by the legendary Rajkumar Hirani, is proving to be a box office success, despite being made on a relatively low budget of 120 crores. Although its collections have stabilized on day 14, remaining on the lower side, overall, the film has been a triumph for both Khan and Hirani.

This marks the third consecutive hit for Khan in 2023, following the blockbusters Pathaan and Jawan. This hat trick solidifies his position as a leading force in Bollywood, after facing some setbacks with previous films like Zero. While Dunki was expected to be a major box office draw, its unique genre targeting illegal immigration (Donkey Flights) might have limited its audience to a certain extent.

Despite facing competition from Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal and Prabhas’ Salaar, all three films seem to be coexisting peacefully, catering to different audiences. While Dunki isn’t experiencing a massive upsurge in collections, it’s holding steady, managing to add around 3-3.60 crores on day 14, slightly dipping from yesterday’s 4.50 crores. However, considering it’s a regular weekday, this performance is respectable, indicating the film isn’t facing the dreaded “mid-week blues” yet.

With these latest collections, Dunki’s total earnings are estimated to reach somewhere between 206.08 and 206.68 crores. This already surpasses the lifetime collection of Khan’s own film, Happy New Year (2014), which stood at 205 crores. This is a significant milestone for Khan and further underlines Dunki’s success.

In essence, Dunki, despite its lower budget and niche genre, is proving to be a solid hit at the box office. It’s contributing to Khan’s strong comeback year and establishing its own place in the current film landscape. This heartwarming dramedy, featuring Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Boman Irani, and even a cameo by Vicky Kaushal, is definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for a unique and entertaining movie experience.
