BookMyShow CEO Summoned Over Coldplay Ticket Black Market Case

The Mumbai Police are investigating BookMyShow, a popular online ticket-selling company, for allegedly allowing people to illegally resell Coldplay concert tickets at much higher prices.

Here’s what happened:

  • Coldplay, a famous band, is coming to India for a concert in January 2025. Many fans were excited to buy tickets.
  • BookMyShow was responsible for selling the tickets online. The official ticket prices ranged from ₹2,500 to ₹35,000.
  • Many fans couldn’t get tickets because they sold out very quickly.
  • Soon, those same tickets started appearing on other websites at incredibly high prices, sometimes as much as ₹3 lakh! This is called “ticket scalping” – buying tickets just to resell them at a huge profit.
  • A lawyer named Amit Vyas filed a complaint with the police. He accused BookMyShow of being involved in this illegal activity. He believes the company tricked people and should be punished.
  • The police are now investigating BookMyShow. They have summoned the CEO and the technical head of the company for questioning. They want to understand how these tickets ended up being sold illegally at such inflated prices.
  • BookMyShow says it has nothing to do with the reselling. They claim they don’t work with any of the websites or individuals involved in scalping the tickets. They are also cooperating with the police investigation.

Why is this a big deal?

  • It’s unfair to fans: Real fans who wanted to see Coldplay might miss out because they can’t afford the ridiculously high prices on the resale market.
  • It’s illegal: In India, it’s against the law to buy a large number of tickets just to sell them at a much higher price.
  • It hurts the reputation of BookMyShow: People might lose trust in the company if they think it is involved in illegal activities.

What happens next?

The police will continue their investigation. They will try to find out:

  • How did the tickets end up on other websites?
  • Who is responsible for reselling them at such high prices?
  • Did BookMyShow have any role in this?

Depending on what they find, the police might take action against BookMyShow or the people involved in reselling the tickets.

This situation highlights the problem of ticket scalping, which is a common issue with popular events. It’s important for people to be aware of this and to avoid buying tickets from unauthorized sources.
