Rana Daggubati Says Rana Naidu Made Him Less Popular: ‘That Very Rarely Happens’
Rana, a popular actor, started doing shows online this year. His first one, “Rana Naidu,” was based on another show called “Ray Donovan.” It ended up being the most-watched Indian show on Netflix ever! But believe it or not, Rana says because of that, he actually feels less popular than before. It seems strange, right?
Let me explain. While tons of people watched “Rana Naidu,” many only saw him playing one specific character. They might not recognize him in other roles or remember all the different things he’s done before. It’s like wearing a cool costume everyone loves, but then no one can see who you are underneath!
So, even though “Rana Naidu” was a huge hit, it made Rana feel a bit invisible in other ways. He wants people to see him as more than just the guy from that one online show. He wants them to remember all the other work he’s done and the different characters he can play.
Speaking about the show on Actors’ Rountable With Rajeev Masand, Rana said, “I became less popular in my case. That very rarely happens but it did.” He added, “Somewhere, it was a pandemic idea where we were like what do we do now? We don’t know when cinemas are opening up, we might not have a job for a couple of years. How do we get cracking on this?”
He added, “I was always interested in topics that are taboo to society that you can tell in a very mainstream form. Because at some point, we try to tell it in cinema and it becomes very arthouse, it becomes a sub-genre in some ways. But this had child abuse in a gangster drama set inside of a family. To me, that was very interesting. It’s family drama that everyone gets. It has topics that you don’t want to talk about or spoken very boldly and harshly so that was the first reason I got onto it.”
Meanwhile, ‘Rana Naidu’ is created and helmed by Karan Anshuman and Suparn Verma. Produced by Sunder Aaron under the banner of Locomotive Global Inc., the series stars Venkatesh Daggubati, Rana Daggubati, Suchitra Pillai, Gaurav Chopra, and Surveen Chawla in pivotal roles. It premiered on Netflix on March 10, 2023.
