Tovino Thomas’ 2018 Is Out of The Oscars Race, Fails to Make It To Final 15
Malayalam film “2018: Everyone is a Hero” misses out on Oscar nomination
The Malayalam film “2018: Everyone is a Hero,” which was India’s official entry in the international feature film category at the 2024 Academy Awards, did not make it to the final shortlist. The film, directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, tells the story of the devastating Kerala floods in 2018.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced the shortlist of 15 films for the category on Friday. The frontrunners include Jonathan Glazer’s historical drama “The Zone of Interest” (UK), Denmark’s “The Promised Land,” starring Mads Mikkelsen, and “Perfect Days” from Japan.
The shortlist also includes films from Armenia, Bhutan, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, Spain, Tunisia, and Ukraine. A total of 88 countries submitted films for the category. The shortlisted films will now advance to the next round of voting.
“2018,” starring Tovino Thomas in the lead role, was announced as India’s official entry for the Oscars in September. The film was a major box office success in India, earning over Rs 200 crore and becoming the highest-grossing film in Malayalam cinema history.
In a post on Instagram, director Joseph said that the opportunity to represent India at the Oscars was a dream come true.
“I sincerely apologise to all my well-wishers and supporters for disappointing you all. Nevertheless, the opportunity to represent India in this competition has been a dream-like journey that I will cherish for a lifetime,” the filmmaker wrote.
“Being the highest-grossing film and the official Indian entry to the Oscars is a rare achievement in any filmmaker’s career. I am grateful to God for choosing me for this extraordinary journey,” he added.
The AMPAS also unveiled shortlists for nine other categories, including original song, original score, sound, documentary feature, documentary short, animated short film, live action short film, makeup and hairstyling, and visual effects.

At the 95th Academy Awards, the Indian films “RRR” and “The Elephant Whisperers” won the awards for best original song and best documentary short, respectively. However, India’s official entry in the international film category, the Gujarati film “Chhello Show,” did not make it to the final five nominations.
The last Indian film to be nominated for an Oscar in the international feature film category was “Lagaan” in 2001.
The 96th Academy Awards are scheduled to take place on March 10, 2024, in Los Angeles.
