Rags to Riches: This ‘Taarak Mehta…’ Actor Hardly Earned Rs 50 Per Day; He Now Owns Two Restaurants In Posh Areas of Mumbai. Hard Work Truly Paid Off!

He further added, “Believe me, in these eight years, I used to take my portfolio and knock every producer’s door for the role. Naam hone ke bawjud kaam nahi mila mujhe. So, just to survive in this industry, I started assisting directors, choreographers and casting directors. I did few cameo roles but nothing big. Nine years back, I signed Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. And now, there’s no looking back.”

So, how did Taarak Mehta happen? “During my college days, producer Asit Modi and I were in the same batch. So, he knew me personally and professionally. One day, while finalizing the star cast, he called me up and introduced Abdul’s character. Honestly, I had no option rather than saying yes to it. Initially, I was required to shoot for only 2-3 days in a month. But then, the character became so popular that people started recognizing me as Abdul and not Sharad. Taarak se mera naya janm hua (smiles).”
