Tamil OTT & Theatrical Releases August 2024: The Tamil cinema industry is buzzing with excitement as August 2024 promises a lineup of highly anticipated releases, both in theatres and on OTT platforms. This array of movies and web series is expected to revive the Tamil Nadu box office after a period of low activity. Here’s a look at what’s in store for Tamil cinema enthusiasts this August.
Indian 2 (OTT):
The much-anticipated Indian 2, starring Kamal Haasan, faced delays in its OTT release on Netflix due to its poor box office performance. Initially slated for an August 2 release, it is now rumoured to premiere on August 9, 2024.
Uppu Puli Kaaram (OTT):
Currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, this Tamil web series centers on an elderly couple running a mess and their family dynamics. New episodes are released every Friday.
Tamil Theatrical Releases August 2024:
Boat:
Releasing on 2 August, this World War II drama directed by Chimbu Deven stars Yogi Babu. Set in 1943, the film follows a group of ten strangers, led by a boatman, seeking refuge in the Bay of Bengal. The cast includes Gouri G Kishan, MS Bhaskar and others. The movie features cinematography by Madhesh Manickam and music by Ghibran.
Kottukkaali:
Directed by PS Vinothraj, Kottukkaali stars Soori and Anna Ben (Kalki 2898 AD fame). This movie explores themes of misogyny and superstition and is set to release on 23 August.
Vaazhai:
Mari Selvaraj’s Vaazhai, releasing on 23 August, focuses on children’s lives. The film stars Kalaiyarasan and Nikhila Vimal.
Thangalaan:
Pa Ranjith’s historical action drama Thangalaan will be released on 15 August. Starring Vikram, Malavika Mohanan and others, the film is set in Karnataka’s Kolar Gold Fields.
Mazhai Pidikkatha Manithan:
This action thriller, also releasing on 2 August, is directed by SD Vijay Milton. Starring Vijay Antony and Sarath Kumar, the film follows a man in hiding whose anonymity is disrupted when he rescues an injured dog. The movie will also be released in Telugu as Toofan.
Vasco Da Gama:
Nakkhul’s Vasco Da Gama, set for a 2 August release, offers a satirical take on government and societal issues. Directed by RG Krishnan, the film features Vamsi Krishna, KS Ravikumar and others. The movie’s music is by Arun NV.
Jama:
Directed by and starring Pari Elavazhagan, Jama hits theatres on 2 August. The film focuses on a team of Therukoothu performers and features Chetan and Ammu Abhirami.
Pechi:
Based on a short film by Balu Mahendra, Pechi will be released on 2 August. The horror film starring Gayathrie Shankar explores themes of black magic and witchcraft.
Nanban Oruvan Vandha Piragu:
This drama about friendship, directed by Ananth, is set for a 2 August release. It stars Bhavani Sre and Mirchi Vijay.
Andhagan:
The Tamil remake of Andhadhun, Andhagan is now set to release on 9 August. Directed by Thiagarajan, the film features Prashanth and an ensemble cast.
Minmini:
Directed by Halitha Shameem, Minmini stars Esther Anil and Pravin Kishore. This drama, which explores survivor’s guilt, will be released on 9 August.
Demonte Colony 2:
The sequel to the 2015 horror thriller, Demonte Colony 2 is set for release on 15 August. Directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu, it stars Arulnithi Tamilarasu.
Raghu Thatha:
Starring Keerthy Suresh, this satirical film directed by Suman Kumar will be released on 15 August. It follows Kayalvizhi’s journey to protect her land.
