Hema Committee Report on Sexual Harassment in Malayalam Film Industry Causes Uproar

A new report about sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry has caused a lot of discussion and anger. The report, released on August 19, 2024, lists 17 different ways women are mistreated, including things like unequal pay, threats of rape, and unwanted sexual advances.

This committee was formed after a female actor was sexually assaulted in 2017. Actor Dileep is one of the people accused in that case. The report has stirred up a lot of debate in the film industry.

Tanushree Dutta’s Criticism

Tanushree Dutta, an actress who spoke out about sexual misconduct in Bollywood in 2018, is not happy with the report. She thinks it took too long to make and doesn’t believe it will change anything.

She said, “These committees and reports are useless. It took them seven years to make a report on something that happened in 2017?” She also questioned the purpose of the new report, saying that the real problem is that the accused people haven’t been arrested and the laws aren’t strong enough.

Dutta believes that people like Nana Patekar (whom she accused of misconduct) and Dileep are dangerous and can’t be changed. She doesn’t trust the system and thinks these reports and committees are just a waste of time.

Tanushree Dutta’s brave actions in 2018 started the #MeToo movement in India. Many other women also shared their stories of harassment and abuse after that. But even with all the attention, the legal cases and investigations have been slow and difficult.
