Tamil Cinema in 2024: A Mixed Bag

Things haven’t been easy for Tamil movies lately. Many films released this year haven’t been getting great reviews from critics or doing well with audiences. This is in sharp contrast to Malayalam cinema, which is having a fantastic year with almost every movie becoming a big hit at the box office. Films like Fahadh Faasil’s “Aavesham” and “Manjummel Boys” have been breaking records left and right.

But even though it’s been a tough year overall, a few Tamil movies have managed to do really well. In fact, some of them have even crossed the 100 crore rupee mark at the box office, which is a big accomplishment! Let’s take a closer look at these successful Tamil films of 2024.

Movies Making a Big Splash

• Aranmanai 4: This horror movie came out on May 3rd, 2024. Critics weren’t all in agreement on how good it was, with some giving it mixed reviews and others liking it more. But even though reviews were all over the place, the movie did great at the box office. It made over 100 crores, becoming the most successful film in the “Aranmanai” series and one of the top Tamil movies of the year. As of now, there’s no official word on when it will be available to watch online (OTT release).

• Captain Miller: This action movie hit theaters worldwide on January 12th, 2024, right around the Pongal festival. It was shown in both regular theaters and IMAX. Critics liked the movie, and it did really well at the box office, making over 104 crores! This makes it the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024 so far and the eighth highest-grossing South Indian film of the year.

Captain Miller OTT Release Date

Dhanush’s latest offering Captain Miller arrived on Amazon Prime Video on February 9 after a successful theatrical run.

It is pertinent to note that Tamil movie Ayalaan managed to make a decent box office collection, but it failed to reach Rs 100 crore. The movie earned Rs 96 crore at the worldwide box office.
