Shaitaan Director Vikas Bahl on the success of Film: “Ajay Devgn generously stepped back to let R Madhavan take centre-stage”
Vikas Bahl Scores a Hit with “Shaitaan” After Previous Flop
Vikas Bahl’s latest movie, “Shaitaan,” is a big success at the box office, a major comeback after his previous film, “Ganapath,” did poorly. “Shaitaan” is a spooky and mysterious story that’s been a hit with audiences.
Devgn Takes a Backseat to Let Madhavan Shine
Director Vikas Bahl is especially grateful to actor Ajay Devgn. Devgn was a producer on “Shaitaan” and could have easily chosen to play the lead role, which was a powerful one. Instead, Devgn generously stepped aside to give actor R Madhavan the chance to be the star. Bahl says this shows how kind and confident Devgn is as an actor. While Madhavan is the main character, Bahl also praises Devgn’s performance as a father trying to protect his kids from something evil. Bahl even says he sees “Shaitaan” more as a family drama with scary elements than just a horror movie. He’s impressed by how Madhavan brought unexpected depth to his character.
Bahl Embraces the Unknown for “Shaitaan”
Interestingly, director Vikas Bahl admits he’s not a big horror movie fan himself! Making “Shaitaan” was a whole new experience for him. He thought this lack of experience might actually be a good thing, allowing him to create a unique horror film. To learn more about the genre, he did watch movies by some famous horror directors to get a feel for things. Bahl is proud that “Shaitaan” is scary but also tells an emotional story. He avoided using cheap tricks to scare the audience and instead focused on the real feeling of black magic being a threat. This, he believes, makes the movie’s evil presence feel more believable.
Praising the Cast
Vikas Bahl has nothing but good things to say about his actors. He says Ajay Devgn is a superstar who can act in any kind of movie and that audiences trust his judgment because he always picks interesting films. Bahl specifically chose R Madhavan because his typically good-guy image would make him a surprising character to be possessed by a demon. In Bahl’s opinion, Madhavan delivered an outstanding performance. The director is also a big fan of actress Jyotika and is happy he was able to convince her to return to Hindi cinema after a break.
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Vikas Bahl admits his previous film, “Ganapath,” wasn’t successful. He even started working on “Shaitaan” while “Ganapath” was still being filmed. On a brighter note, Bahl is working on a sequel to his hit movie “Queen.” The script is still being written, but they hope to finish it soon. He remembers how special making “Queen” was ten years ago and is excited that they were able to come up with a good story for a sequel before the anniversary of the original film. Bahl even points out that both “Queen” and “Shaitaan” were released in the same week of March! He jokes that maybe he should celebrate his birthday in March instead of May.
