What Is “All Eyes On Rafah” Campaign?
On social media, an AI-crafted image emblazoned with the phrase “All Eyes on Rafah,” set against a striking backdrop of desert tents, has taken the internet by storm. Activists and humanitarian groups are harnessing this powerful imagery and slogan to spotlight the dire situation of the Palestinian people in Gaza.
Despite the dense civilian population in Rafah and a swelling tide of international condemnation, Israel has pressed forward with its military offensive. Reports suggest that the conflict has now engulfed the very heart of Rafah, raising grave concerns for the safety of civilians trapped in the turmoil. The viral spread of this poignant image and hashtag highlights the pressing need for global attention and action in response to the worsening crisis in Gaza.
What Is Rafah?
Rafah is where the Rafah Border Crossing sits, the only route between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. Once run by Israeli forces, it was handed over to the Palestinian Authority in 2005. The European Union started overseeing it in 2005, and by 2006, the Palestinian Authority’s guards managed it on their side. Egypt’s 750 Border Guards take charge on their side, following an agreement with Israel in 2005.
What Happened In Rafah?
Israel initiated a strike on Rafah late Sunday, following a barrage of rockets launched by Hamas towards the Tel Aviv area, most of which were intercepted. Despite a recent directive from the United Nations’ top court to cease operations in Rafah, Israeli forces intensified their offensive on this border town, once considered a last refuge in the territory.
The attack resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 45 individuals, including children, at a refugee camp in Gaza’s Rafah. This incident, occurring just days after the International Court of Justice mandated a halt to Israeli operations in the area, has provoked widespread international condemnation, further isolating Israel on the global stage amid the ongoing Gaza conflict.
Rafah, previously a crucial entry point for humanitarian aid, has seen its significance eroded as Israel’s military offensive on the Gaza side of the border escalated earlier this month, culminating in the seizure of control over the crossing.
