Mahesh Bhatt’s Honest Take On Alia Bhatt’s Acting: ‘Just a Mannequin’ In Student Of The Year
Mahesh Bhatt, in an interview with India Today, discussed Alia’s evolution as an actress. He highlighted her impressive portrayal of characters in Highway and Udta Punjab. Mahesh expressed amazement at how Alia, who grew up in the urban environment of Juhu, mastered the ‘adivasi’ accent for her role in Udta Punjab. He said, “I must say that I was devastated by Udta Punjab. I didn’t understand when did this girl, this Juhu girl exposed to our home, where we live like a normal family… How did this Juhu girl get the accent right of an Adivasi from Chhattisgarh? It was amazing. I was astounded by that.”
Mahesh did not hold back when sharing his thoughts on Alia’s debut film, Student of the Year. He mentioned that while she showed raw power and vulnerability in Highway and Udta Punjab, she was “just a mannequin” in her first movie. He remarked, “Her raw power, and her ability to get into such a vulnerable space and bare her heart. Highway and Udta Punjab… It was a departure from that girl who was just a mannequin in Student of the Year. You see the evolution in your child also.”
Directed by Karan Johar, Student of the Year was released in 2012 and also marked the debuts of Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. Despite the film’s success, Alia’s acting abilities were truly recognized in her subsequent roles. She has since starred in notable films such as 2 States, Gully Boy, Kapoor & Sons, Gangubai Kathiawadi and Kalank. Additionally, Alia made her Hollywood debut alongside Gal Gadot in Heart of Stone. Her collaboration with her father, Sadak 2, did not fare well at the box office.
Alia Bhatt’s upcoming projects include Jigra, directed by Vasan Bala, and a movie from the YRF spy universe titled Alpha.
