Kalki 2898 AD: A Sci-Fi Epic Makes a Big Splash at the Box Office

Record-Breaking Debut Followed by Solid Day Two

Kalki 2898 AD, a new science fiction movie set in a future India, had a huge opening at the box office! On its first day, it earned a record-breaking Rs 95.3 crore (around $11.4 million) in India alone. This made it the third highest-grossing opening day for an Indian movie ever, behind only RRR and Baahubali 2. However, there was a drop in earnings on the second day, with the film collecting Rs 54 crore (around $6.4 million). Despite this decrease, the total collection for the first two days is still a strong Rs 149.3 crore (around $17.8 million). Industry experts expect the numbers to pick up again over the weekend.

Packed Theaters for the Sci-Fi Adventure

The movie seems to be holding the audience’s attention. On the second day (Friday, June 28th), theaters playing the Telugu version were especially packed, with an average occupancy of 65%. This means that on average, over two-thirds of the seats were filled throughout the day. Occupancy was highest for the night shows, with nearly 83% of seats filled!

A Big-Budget Spectacle

Kalki 2898 AD is a big-budget production, costing a reported Rs 600 crore (around $713 million) to make. This makes it one of the most expensive Indian movies ever filmed.

Story and Cast

The movie is a mix of science fiction and the classic Indian story of the Mahabharata. It’s set in a future world (2898 AD) that has been devastated by some unknown event. The story follows a group of people who are trying to protect a special child named Kalki.

The movie stars some of India’s biggest celebrities, including Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan. Prabhas and Deepika play Bhairava and Sumati, two of the heroes on the mission. Amitabh Bachchan portrays Ashwatthama, a character from the Mahabharata. Kamal Haasan plays the villain, Yaskin, who is expected to have a bigger role in the sequel.

This is the first movie in a planned series called the “Kalki Cinematic Universe.”
