Ashutosh Gowariker Meets DSP Kulkarni’s Family Before “Manvat Murders” Release

Acclaimed filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, known for directing epic historical dramas like Lagaan, Jodhaa Akbar, and Swades, is stepping into a new role, both literally and figuratively. He’s portraying the real-life character of DSP Rama Kant Kulkarni in the upcoming web series Manvat Murders, set to premiere on Sony LIV on October 4th, 2024.

In a gesture of respect and to deepen his understanding of the character, Gowariker recently visited the family of the late DSP Kulkarni. This visit provided him with invaluable insights into the life and personality of the man he portrays on screen.

During his visit, Gowariker met with Kulkarni’s wife, daughter Anita Bhogle (who is married to renowned cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle), and other family members. He learned about Kulkarni’s dedication to his work, his compassionate nature, and his strong family values.

“Meeting the Kulkarnis was humbling,” Gowariker shared. “Hearing about Rama Kant ji’s warmth and love for his family; his gentlemanly attitude towards criminals; and his qualities of being a team leader gave me a deeper understanding of the man behind the uniform.”  

This personal interaction with Kulkarni’s family allowed Gowariker to go beyond the historical accounts and police records. He gained a deeper appreciation for the human side of the legendary officer, which undoubtedly enriched his portrayal in the series.

Manvat Murders delves into the chilling true story of a series of brutal murders that shook Maharashtra in the 1970s. DSP Kulkarni played a crucial role in investigating these crimes, and his meticulous approach and sharp intellect were instrumental in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
