Anupam Kher Recalls Emergency Time In Delhi; Says ‘Ek Murdani Si Chah Gayi Thi…’

Anupam Kher will soon play Jayaprakash Narayan in the movie Emergency. This political drama will show the time when former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of Emergency in India. The Emergency lasted for 21 months, from 1975 to 1977.

Anupam Kher shared that he was in drama school in Delhi when the Emergency happened. He said that suddenly the city felt like a funeral, very quiet and sad. Kher also said that at that time, Jayaprakash Narayan was a symbol of hope for young people.

At the trailer launch of Emergency, Anupam Kher remembered his days at the National School of Drama in New Delhi. He said, “Suddenly, it felt like a funeral, there was silence everywhere.”

He added, “Jaya Prakash Narayan was the hope of the youth and the nation at that time to fight against the emergency. He was my hero. When Kangana told me I was going to play that role, I was already wanting to play someone who had done something like that.”

Kangana Ranaut announced this political drama in 2021. She will play the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The movie’s release has been delayed a few times. Finally, it will be in theaters on September 6th.

The movie stars Kangana Ranaut, Milind Soman, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry, Satish Kaushik, Bhumika Chawla, Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Christophe Guybet, and Scott Alexander Young. Shreyas Talpade will play Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Satish Kaushik will play former Defense Minister Jagjivan Ram.
